*Capstone – More Info.*

Some of you have asked about using images, charts, etc., that you draw from various sources.  This can be good and useful for your project, and in most cases, images and charts and the like should be in appendices.  And this is very important:  make sure that you fully cite any and all sources for charts and images that you use in your project.

*CAPSTONE INFORMATION*

-Office Hours:  Since all of you have varying elective and/or sport schedules, I will hold office hours (between now and capstone orals) by appointment.  Feel free to call or email (email is better) any time to schedule a meeting with me.  Your coordinator can meet with me, or your whole team can meet with me, or whatever you like.  My schedule will be flexible, so we should rather easily be able to set up meetings if you would like one.

-Capstone syllabus:  http://www.bu.edu/cgs/common/images/PDFs/cgs-capstone-syllabus-2009.pdf

-Don’t forget that you need three spiral-bound copies of your capstone project at the hand-in meeting in JSA.

-Each member of your group also needs to bring a copy of the project to the oral defense.  Your copies need not be bound, but make sure you all have one.

-Remember Prof. Wilcox’s editing advice sessions (April 15 and 16 in the morning).  It will be very useful in helping your group structure and polish your project.

-Use MLA format for your project.  Be absolutely sure that you are precise about format.

-Remember that you can give us a corrections page, if you need one, after your hand-in but before your oral defense.  Hopefully, your editing process will be rigorous enough to avoid most errors, but the corrections page option is there if you need it.

-Also remember that you can place data (charts, graphs, etc.) in appendices.  That way, pages of visually-displayed data need not count toward your page total.

-Good luck!

Final Exam and Office Hours

Our social science final exam will be next Thursday.  It will be like other divisional exams (midterms and finals) that you have taken in social science at CGS – it will be a multiple-choice exam.  Because of the truncated semester, it will cover all of the material from the beginning of this semester.  So, in other words, it covers the whole section of the course on U.S. foreign policy.

Office Hours and Tutorials:

1. I will be around Thursday afternoon for some additional office hours (by appointment) before the papers are due, for any of you who are interested in last-minute advice!   If you want to meet Thursday afternoon, send me an email by tomorrow.

2. I will schedule extended office hours next week before the final exam, as well as a finals-week tutorial.  Stay tuned to this site for dates and times.

Good luck on all of your assignments, and with your exams next week.

And don’t forget that our capstone kickoff will be next Friday (the 27th).

Important Info. for This Week – Including JSA TUESDAY

-The JSA Lecture has been rescheduled. So tomorrow at 11, instead of going to team lecture, go to JSA for the lecture. Also, since I will be giving the JSA, I won’t be able to hold my regular office hour tomorrow.

-I will add extra office hours for this week, in case you want to talk about your paper assignments or anything else.

-One other point on papers, in case you were confused:  the newspaper article that you pick should be from the time of the event you are covering in your paper (for example, if you are doing the Cuban Missile Crisis, the article should be from the time it was going on in 1962).

-Readings for this week:

Combs, pp. 319-326; 329-344; 358-363

Tilchin, Cold War Reader, section X, all documents

By the end of the week, also finish “Shevardnaze and the End of the Soviet System” in Nolan, Ethics and Statecraft.
